Darian Unger lives in Silver Spring and is a husband and father of three kids. He is a business professor at Howard University, and a volunteer firefighter and EMT in the Silver Spring Fire Department / Montgomery County Fire-Rescue.
Darian and his wife Jill met at Swarthmore College, after which he became an environmental engineer and she became a teacher and taught for several years at Takoma Park Middle School. Darian managed several international energy projects, then completed his masters and doctoral research at MIT on innovations to combat global warming.
Darian is now a business professor at Howard University, where he teaches students how to innovate and start new companies. He has won both student and university awards for outstanding teaching, and many of his former students are now young business leaders in the Washington D.C. area. Darian continues to focus on the development of new environmental energy technologies.
Darian is a Montgomery County volunteer firefighter and EMT. He responds to emergency 911 calls from Silver Spring and Takoma Park.
Rushing to accident and assault victims in our neighborhood led Darian to champion public safety initiatives for walkable communities and safer streets. He served as chair of both the Silver Spring Transportation and Pedestrian Safety Committee and the Citizens Advisory Board, where he advocated for livable communities and challenged state and local authorities to act transparently and make necessary improvements.
Darian is a longtime neighborhood advocate and government watchdog. He has a strong public record fighting for smart growth, sustainable development, equal opportunity, civil liberties, and strong pubic schools.
